The website is dedicated to everyone who is passionate about cacti and, like us, after starting to love these plants, wondered how they live in nature.

Since 2005, traveling as independent researchers throughout the areas of the American continent that most interest our studies on cacti conservation, distribution and classification, we have devoted ourselves to the observation, knowledge and photographic documentation of cacti in their natural habitats.
For years we have walked through the vast territories of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay constructing an archive of notes and images.
Behind every survey there would be a story to tell. Often, cacti live in difficult to access places, finding  them is not always easy and we don’t have large economic resources. But with perseverance and available time, and thanks also to all the people we met and who welcomed and helped us, what we found there was always exciting, and has been source of reflection.
The taxa research proved to be the best guide we could ask for. By following the path traced by the populations surveys, we met wonderful people, plants and places.
Then we had the idea not to keep all this only for ourselves, but rather to make a selection of the materials collected over years of travel available, accompanied by our comments on taxa, elaborated on our return. Texts are summarized and completed by the periodic publication of our booklet (downloadable for free), which accompanied the first site’s release and following updates.
Our formation, constituted by field experience and constant updating in the study of scientific literature (mainly in biogeography, molecular systematics, statistical models, Bayesian, Maximum Likelihood, Maximum Parsimony approaches to phylogenetic inference, and cladistics theory), led us to develop a taxonomy on which to base a coherent classification system.
Since 2010 cactusinhabitat.org, along with many beautiful pictures that all cacti lovers will find useful for recognizing taxa, has proposed itself as a modern tool for the classification of the cactus family, also offering a proposal to use digital images to create new standards, useful in the documentation and classification of living plants.
Transferring our ideas onto the web would not have been possible without the fundamental collaboration of Harun Alikadic (web-designer) and Dumitru Ceban (programming), both of whom we thank.
